BANYAN Site-Specific Patch Release Notice

Date

11 December 1996

Patch Name

96077-VINES

Platform

AT/EISA, CNS, MC

Prerequisites

A DOS extended memory manager, such as Emm386, QEMM, or 386Max must

be installed on the client.

The Server must be running VINES version 6.20(0), 6.30(0), or 6.40(0).

Does the Patch REBOOT or RESTART the Server

Neither

Problem(s) Fixed

1. Loads a new version of the VINES redirector into the VINES Files

PCINIT directory. The new redirector, REDIREMS.EXE, uses less low

memory in DOS than previous VINES redirectors. When loaded by the

client REDIREMS checks the workstation for available EMS memory.

If EMS memory exists and is enabled, the redirector automatically

loads a large portion of itself into the available EMS memory

space.

Recommendation

Applying this patch installs the EMS redirector on drive Z of the

target server. To install the new redirector on the client, run

NEWREV from the client and select a server to which this patch has

been applied.

To make it easier to identify servers to which the patch has been

applied, edit the VCONFIG.DAT string on patched servers. For example,

change the default string "none" to "new redirector."

If DOS EMS memory on the client is not enabled, or is unavailable,

the EMS redirector functions as the standard VINES redirector,

REDIRALL.EXE.

To enable the EMS redirector after copying it to the client, configure

the client as follows:

- Install a DOS extended memory manager, such as Emm386, QEMM, or

386Max.

- Set the EMS page frame to 64KB.

If the AUTOEXEC.BAT loads VINES components individually, edit this

file to specify this new redirector, REDIREMS.EXE.
